Sleep & FIFO Workers

While studying the effect of a FIFO lifestyle on mental wellbeing, researchers also focused their attention on the quality and quantity of sleep in the FIFO population.

The study found that the sleep quality of FIFO workers is significantly worse than the benchmark population’s. It was also found that 17% of FIFO workers used tranquilisers or sleeping pills, versus 4% in the benchmark population.

Link Between Mental Health & Sleep

Though the relationship is complicated, many experts agree there is a direct link between an individual’s mental health and their quality of sleep. In fact, Harvard Health Publishing states that the two are closely connected: sleep deprivation affects your psychological state and mental health, and those with mental health problems are more likely to have insomnia or other sleep disorders.
